The project uses Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ‘ways of knowing and learning’ as research methods in the form of ‘Aboriginal Standpoints’, including traditional language, oral narratives, lived experiences, art and artefact making. In-depth understanding and appreciation of ‘Aboriginal Standpoints’ through ‘yarning’ as a method of inquiry has been integral to adding to the educators’ understanding of teaching for equity. Yunkaporta (2009) defines yarning as a dialogue, meeting or discussion. It should be acknowledged that yarning can vary depending on the individual context and Aboriginal community involved. Through yarning, this project established a deeper appreciation of the importance Aboriginal students’ cultural, social and emotional experiences can have on teaching practice and Aboriginal student perceptions of the higher education environment. Methodological approaches of collaborative dialogical inquiry and appreciative inquiry were used in a complementary way with Aboriginal Standpoints to grapple with higher education student and educator experiences and perceptions of each other to bring about new ways of knowing and learning. Yearning to Yarn has established that integrating new ways of knowing and learning in teaching practice, such as a deeper understanding of the Aboriginal cultural notions of yarning, is not straightforward (in literature and from the conversation). However, it is integral to constructing an understanding of the Aboriginal student’s experience in higher education. Yearning to Yarn explores barriers to equity and inclusivity in higher education with the potential perception that Aboriginal Standpoints are introduced as the antithesis of Western organisational efficiency. Aboriginal Standpoints required us to consider “What makes it what it is for us?” and “How can we create space and time for it?” within broader institutional higher educational structures as an accepted practice in teaching and policy development. Yearning to Yarn enabled us to ask constructive questions of institutional thinking on inclusive and equity teaching principles embedded in policy to explore the question “what happens next?” – concerning yarning policy off the bookshelf, moving from policy to praxis and seeking the embodiment of the intentions behind institutional policy on equity and inclusivity. Moving forward, Yearning to Yarn identified scope for educators to ‘grapple’ with implications of Aboriginal standpoints for teaching for equity and explore the implications of such grappling for being: responsive to Aboriginal students’ personal situations and mindful of their cultural considerations, to transform educational practice for teaching for equity.]]> Thu 18 Mar 2021 10:16:26 AEDT ]]> Victorian theatre posters /manager/Repository/uon:6614 Thu 16 Aug 2018 10:27:35 AEST ]]> Early visual communication: introducing the 6000-year-old Buon Frescoes from Teleilat Ghassul, Jordan /manager/Repository/uon:37415 Thu 12 Nov 2020 17:24:50 AEDT ]]> The art and science of botanical illustration and identification: developing an illustrated handbook to the iconic wildflowers of Muogamarra Nature Reserve /manager/Repository/uon:35171 Thu 11 Jul 2019 10:18:36 AEST ]]> Restoring justice to Islam: an historical, theological and artistic exploration /manager/Repository/uon:2316 Sat 24 Mar 2018 11:12:34 AEDT ]]> Temporary and permanent: Cida de Aragon /manager/Repository/uon:8435 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:40:47 AEDT ]]> On the work of media artist Cida de Aragon: urban migration, surveillance and public space /manager/Repository/uon:8670 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:38:44 AEDT ]]> Ben Hall: an essay /manager/Repository/uon:7095 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:37:58 AEDT ]]> Landscape reclamation: science, art or business? /manager/Repository/uon:7903 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:35:11 AEDT ]]> Freedom of form: ethics and aesthetics in digital architecture /manager/Repository/uon:1914 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:33:07 AEDT ]]> Concepts of art and design: tensions between domains /manager/Repository/uon:11136 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:10:29 AEDT ]]> Celebrating Australian Indigenous art: valuing culture, relationships and building strength through art /manager/Repository/uon:12293 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:10:11 AEDT ]]> Victorian culture and classical antiquity: art, opera, fiction, and the proclamation of modernity (book review) /manager/Repository/uon:18468 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:59:44 AEDT ]]> The death of emancipatory social work as art and birth of socially engaged art practice /manager/Repository/uon:21272 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:54:42 AEDT ]]> Non ©ode code /manager/Repository/uon:6762 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:47:15 AEDT ]]> Monuments to heroic failure /manager/Repository/uon:5019 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:44:11 AEDT ]]> Perzines: a visual and narrative learning space /manager/Repository/uon:28675 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:37:12 AEDT ]]> The reading room: exploring the use of literature as a strategy for integrating threshold concepts into nursing curricula /manager/Repository/uon:26802 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:36:26 AEDT ]]> Mathematics in, of and for architecture: a framework of types /manager/Repository/uon:28389 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:36:01 AEDT ]]> Relationships between architecture and mathematics /manager/Repository/uon:28390 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:36:00 AEDT ]]> L'Art de voyager sans quitter Paris: du Passage de l'Opéra jusqu'au désert de l'Exopotamie /manager/Repository/uon:3770 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:20:49 AEDT ]]> ORI* on the aesthetics of folding and technology /manager/Repository/uon:34356 Mon 23 Sep 2019 12:39:40 AEST ]]> An interpretive model for conceptual music /manager/Repository/uon:32221 Mon 23 Sep 2019 12:28:12 AEST ]]> Navigating Norman Creek: engaging art in geographies of plants and urban natures /manager/Repository/uon:31494 Navigating Norman Creek was about an inner city waterway, it shone some light on the ethics of urban forestation and the inter-corporeal exchanges people have with urban plants and animals.
