- Upland wetlands, or hanging swamps, are scattered through the Somersby Plateau NSW, and depend on groundwater to maintain their floristic diversity. Although they are limited in areal extent, the communities provide islands of distinct vegetation assemblages in the surrounding vegetation community. The threats to hanging swamp communities include land clearing, weed invasion, changes to the hydrology due to road building and landfilling, extractive industries, and pollution from adjacent land uses. A project to investigate the biodiversity and management of the upland wetlands aims to understand the current distribution of hanging swamps on the Somersby Plateau, assess their conservation status, understand the associated plant species to enable comparisons with plant species in hanging swamps in other regions of Australia, understand the influence of fire on floristic diversity in the swamps, raise community awareness of the biodiversity value of the swamps and develop an integrated approach for their management. Progress against those objectives is briefly described
