- Description
- Financial crises usually represent the initial manifestation of deeply rooted problems in the real sector. This paper address Thai SMEs’ policies, managerial, distributional, technological and financing features in order to discern what could have been one of the constraints in the pre-crisis period until 1997, which led to the suboptimal use of this propulsive economic force in developing economies. Small and medium-scale enterprises in Thailand mostly focus their attention on labour intensive operations, low capital investments and internal source of funding. The lack of widespread government and private financing schemes forces small business entities to raise funds from families and in unorganised markets that add a relatively high risk premium. In the technological sphere, the reliance on individual product and/or service design is very strong, while the technology diffusion from government agencies remains comparatively negligible. MNCs investing in the Kingdom of Thailand, apply business strategies in accordance with the prevailing corporate culture, which have been tested using the study provided from the Thailand Board of Investment. When compared to Newly Industrialised Economics and Western Developed Countries, Japanese companies place more emphasis on building the network with local suppliers and purchase locally more parts and components. Large firms, as expected, provide better assistance to their suppliers in backward linkages.
