- This study has analysed a range of infill developments in the Knox area of Victoria to develop indicators of the efficacy of rainwater tanks for onsite detention of stormwater. The concepts of effective impervious area, retention number and proportion of development area connected to rainwater tanks show promise as indicators that may bridge the technical void between the need for continuous simulation to understand the performance of rainwater tanks and the use of discrete design methods to specify regulatory performance. It was also established that rainwater tanks can be designed to provide an onsite detention service for a range of infill development scenarios whilst reducing demands for mains water. This function is dependent on demand for rainwater, connection to an optimum roof area and, to a lesser extent, tank size.
