- In her essay "Writing and the Threshold Life," Jane Hirshfield draws on Victor Turner's concept of liminality to identify the moment when the poet enters into a liminal state and "dwells in a threshold state of ambiguity, openness, and indeterminacy". The liminal state approximates the Keatsian negative capability, enabling the poet to accommodate what seems to be contradictions or binary oppositions in his work. This liminality is central to the work of Arthur Yap, opening his work to a broad range of interpretative possibilities and making him the most elusive of the Singapore poets.
