- Description
- The editorial 'PSA testing in asymptomatic men to diagnose prostate cancer remains experimental' by Cox and Sneyd — which appeared in the 5 June 2009 issue of the NZMJ — denigrated the importance of the first reports on mortality from the two large screening trials for prostate cancer, the ERSPC trial carried out in Europe, and the PLCO trial carried out in the USA. We contend that these two massive pieces of scientific endeavour have made a very important contribution to our understanding of the value of prostate cancer screening, and that together they provide direction on when screening has the most benefit on prostate cancer mortality, and how screening is most efficiently performed.
