- Description
- A global youth? Hybrid identities, plural worlds. Why ask the question? Is it not obvious that, when talking of youth culture, the global eclipses the local. This refers to globalisation, a term all too often used as an escape mechanism. Here the term is used to refer to aspects of economic and cultural globalisation emanating from the "central" culture, which threaten to sweep away local identity and practices in favour of a set of frameworks for homogenising consumption and ways of thinking about identity. The article questions the colonialism of speech over cultural globalisation. It sifts through scenarios, also some subsidiary stories on youth not seen in predominantly western cultural studies. It is an attempt to connect global youth with cultures, consumption, resistance and trans-nationalism and digitalisation in the global era.
