- This study is a qualitative investigation of ‘adjustment’ as experienced by former members of charismatic groups. In-depth interviews explored participants’ accounts of recovery and adjustment. Six main themes, conceptualised as ‘modalities of adjustment’, resulted from analysis of the transcripts: gradually letting go of the groups’ belief system; regaining a sense of control, and learning about other groups and brainwashing theories; connecting with other former members; helping others in charismatic groups—finding extrinsic meaning; acknowledging positive aspects of the experience—finding intrinsic meaning; and living with ambiguity and uncertainty. This study suggests that the recovery and adjustment experiences of former members of charismatic groups may be comparable to others who have experienced extreme transitions and adjustments, or relationships where significant power differentials exist.
