- I used to think that there are two issues that were always of major interest to the public. These are politics and the economy. There are letters to the media (and no doubt blogs and e-mails), as well as verbal comments, every day about these two topics. Everyone has an opinion, no matter how ill informed or uneducated. In a democracy, the freedom to express such opinions is a universal right. I am sure you have all noticed however, that a third issue has joined the other two: climate change and Greenhouse warming. Uninformed opinions on this topic become a little more serious, because there can be severe negative consequences. The world has survived written opinions about politics and the economy since the printing press was invented, and no doubt verbal opinions for centuries before that. Can the world survive climate change caused by anthropogenic Greenhouse gas emissions, if uninformed sceptical opinion becomes the basis for government decision making, and the problem is ignored?
