- This chapter aims to review methods of making literacy and numeracy learning meaningful and relevant. It outlines approaches to the development of literacy and numeracy and provides examples of successful interventions. It also aims to develop an appreciation of the importance of parents as partners in the learning process. For students with disabilities or learning difficulties, consistent failure in school tasks may lead to a downward cycle of lack of confidence, less motivation and even further failure. In order to encourage these students to 'try again', it is important that they see school tasks as meaningful. They also need to feel confident that they are able to complete the tasks. There is a need for materials and activities to be specific to the students' needs and interests, with success emphasised and clearly demonstrated. Tasks need to be at an appropriate difficulty level, an appropriate interest level and their relevance made evident. It is also important that a variety of activities is involved to allow the necessary repetition for learning to occur without a loss of interest. Activities that may be used to ensure relevance, generate success and provide repetition and practice are discussed.
