- Description
- Knowledge management processes have to occur in every organization. However, knowledge management is not the primary goal of any organization – the usual primary goal is profit, by producing and successfully selling products. Therefore, it would be inadequate to expect that knowledge management processes will be visible as the separate processes in an organization. Instead, majority of them rather should be expected as hidden (embedded) in core production processes of the organization. For purpose of this chapter, core production processes are defined as usual processes that are employed to develop a product. As we focus on software development organization, software engineering processes term is used interchangeably. It is important to keep in mind that within organization, one can observe explicit knowledge management processes, but majority of the KM processes can be expected to be hidden in core production processes. To understand fully how the knowledge flows, is stored, is managed, etc, it is not enough to analyze knowledge management strategy of the organization. Such a strategy will rather describe only a top of an iceberg. Mapping KM processes onto core production processes in the organization could reveal a more comprehensive view how the organization deals with knowledge.
