- Description
- Many active problems in space physics require accurate identification of the ionospheric projections of boundaries between different plasma regimes, and especially the open-closed field line boundary (OCB). Particle precipitation boundaries map to different regions of the magnetosphere and hence also provide a tool for establishing conjugacy between ground- and space-based instrumentation. The particle precipitation boundaries routinely identified by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites are widely used as a standard for boundary identification, especially with regard to determining the OCB, as they sample the precipitating particles in situ. As these satellites only provide point measurements, remote imaging satellites have also been used to determine the auroral boundaries; the correlation between in-situ and remotely-imaged auroral oval boundaries is generally good, but the mission lifetimes and orbit of some imagers mean they cannot be used for routine analysis. We here present a preliminary study of auroral boundary determinations using the Global Ultra-Violet Imager onboard the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite. These boundaries are compared with those derived from the precipitating particle boundaries from DMSP.
