- Description
- A significant increase in demand for Australian export minerals has seen the need for an increased throughput of bulk material handling. It is not only important that these systems be designed, operated and maintained for optimum efficiency and economy, but also ensuring there is minimal impact on the environment, and the health and safety of personnel and the surrounding community. This means that the control of dust emissions in industrial operations is therefore a matter of high priority. A recent area of research has been to utilise the capabilities of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to qualitatively study dust control. The focus of this study is to use a multiphase Eulerian computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to simulate the flow of a granular material through chutes of different geometry to investigate the impact of dust generation. The multiphase flow has components air, 1mm solid dispersed particles representing the granular material, and 100μm solid dispersed particles representing dust particles. The outlet profiles indicating the distribution of the dust can then be inspected where observations can be made regarding dust generation. The results presented in this paper agree qualitatively with both experimental results and field data.
