- In 1992 Prof. Panov showed that it is possible to convert benzene into phenol using nitrous oxide as oxidant and a very specific iron catalyst. Phenol is an important chemical intermediate and the Panov discovery is now at the industrial demonstration plant stage. The conventional process for phenol manufacture involves the gas phase oxidation of cumene (isopropylbenzene) and has acetone as a co-product. The cumene process has many environmental and operating disadvantages and the emergence of a potential replacement is very exciting. The Panov catalyst is the first to achieve the selective catalytic oxidation of benzene, and so its characterisation and mechanism are thus of great interest. The catalyst is synthesised in what appears almost to be a perverse manner. Iron is introduced into the framework during synthesis of the zeolite ZSM5 by well-known and standard procedures. It is then expelled from the framework by oxidation at a temperature in excess of 1000 K. The result is then said by Panov to generate a specific iron site, named α-iron, which is the selective agent and which is bound to a specific form of oxygen, designated α-oxygen. The inability to produce large concentrations of the α sites triggered intensive literature discussions on the structure of these sites. In this communication we present for the first time our structural investigations on the Panov samples using in in situ EXAFS spectroscopy. We were able to distinguish active and inactive materials as well as observe the change of the reactive interface upon reaction.
