- Large corporate collapses of the past 20 years from the Australian experience of Bond Corp, HIH, OneTel and Harris Scarfe to the American experiences of Enron and WorldCom have evoked a focus on corporate governance in management literature and business research. As banks play a major part within the business community both nationally and internationally a study on corporate governance of banks especially in a significant business sector such as Hong Kong is relevant for the banking industry. This research provides an overview and analysis of investor perceptions of the effectiveness of corporate governance of the banks listed in Hong Kong - that is investor governance. Survey research (with data elicited from 200 investors on their views and perceptions of the quality of the corporate governance practices of the listed banks in Hong Kong) is undertaken to test the effectiveness of the corporate governance of listed banks in Hong Kong, within a shareholder perspective. Outcomes from this research show that Hong Kong listed banks are perceived by shareholders to engage in good internal control and risk management processes. The research results show that according to investors, listed banks in Hong Kong have a high level of corporate governance and in particular have good investor governance.
