- Description
- Throughout the world, masonry has been a staple in the field of structural engineering, particularly residential construction, for hundreds of years. However, despite its prevalence, the behaviour and reliability of unreinforced masonry remain relatively poorly understood. The research presented in this study intends to quantify the variability of the behaviour of unreinforced masonry subjected to in-plane shear loading through repeat full-scale experimental testing of theoretically identical walls. A detailed understanding of wall shear capacity and failure mechanism may be ascertained through the application of cyclic, quasi-static in-plane shear loading, as well as high-resolution, digital image correlation. The probabilistic characterisation of shear wall capacity for different failure modes will allow for the results of stochastic numerical modelled wall strengths to be compared and validated. The results of this study provide a baseline from which a reliability-based calibration of the current design guidelines and standards may be performed.
