- Description
- Remote health monitoring (RHM) uses cutting-edge technologies to offer better-quality healthcare service to patients as well as to make the task of healthcare providers easier. Over the past few years, the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) has shown huge potential for the sector’s growth, creating much research interest and commercial investment. Many research studies and developments have offered innovative personalised healthcare services via RHM with the help of IoMT. This chapter aims to provide readers with the necessary background information on the IoMT in RHM. We introduce the major types of RHM, namely, remote diagnosis, remote healthcare consultation and remote patient monitoring, and also provide the general architecture of IoMT for RHM. Then, we present a brief overview of various hardware-based technologies that are playing a key role in RHM, such as medical sensors and smart devices. After that, we briefly review the infrastructure and software technologies, such as 5G, cloud, fog, artificial intelligence, machine learning and blockchain, which are being used to broaden the field of IoMT and shape its future. Subsequently, this chapter discusses the benefits that the IoMT can bring to RHM and the challenges to overcome in order to take full advantage of IoMT in RHM. Finally, we present three representative case studies of RHM developed with the help of IoMT to give readers a better understanding of the sophisticated technologies used in such environments to deliver enhanced and efficient service.
