- On February 15, 2015 at 00:00 UTC, a continental arctic cold front at the 60°N latitude extending along the 30°E latitude moved rapidly towards south. Two days later, on February 17, it reached the Marmara Sea at 00:00 UTC by moving over the West Black Sea and Istanbul. Before the passing of cold front over West Black Sea, meteorological conditions to cause lake enhanced snow established. On February 17, snow shower started at the Ataturk International Airport (AIA) and became disruptive for aviation sporadially till its cessation. The next day, the visibility decreased 100 m due to snow storm. Finally, snow shower ceased at 07:20 UTC on February 19. There were 81 flights on February 18 and 7 flights on February 19 diverted to other airports because of snow shower. The daily snow depths were measured 40 cm at AIA, 39 cm at Sariyer meteorology station, 27 cm at Kartal meteorology station, 18 cm at Sabiha Gokcen Airport, and 3 cm at Kumkoy meteorology station. The goal of this study to analyze meteorological conditions formed this lake enhance snow event prevailed between 17-19 February 2015. Therefore, we analyzed following products: Aviation Routine Weather Report (METAR) and Aviation Selected Special Weather Report (SPECI) observations for AIA, surface charts, MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) images, Skew-T Log-P diagrams, satellite and RADAR products and sea surface temperatures measured at the Marmara Sea and the Black Sea. At 00:00 UTC on 18 February 2018, the temperature difference between surface air temperature and the sea surface temperature (SST) of the Black Sea is about 9°C and 19°C for the difference between SST and the air temperature at 850-hPa. Inversion (an increase in air temperature by height in the atmosphere) is observed at three different levels, 71 m (1021 hPa), 4614 m (554 hPa), and 5659 m (447 hPa).
