Description: The COVID-19 tourism pause has led to a plethora of analyses by tourism scholars examining the implications for tourism recovery around the world. Many scholars have used the pause to emphasise opportunities to rethink and transform unsustainable forms of tourism (see Ateljevic, 2020; Brouder, 2020; Cheer, 2020; Everingham & Chassagne, 2020; Lew et al., 2020), with a push towards local tourism as part of this agenda (Higgins-Desbiolles & Bigby, 2022). While a localised agenda goes some-way in rethinking tourism towards more equitable, sustainable and even regenerative forms of tourism, for Hall et al. (2020) global approaches and solutions should be prioritised; otherwise, there is a risk that the localisa-tion approach to tourism recovery may well just be a form of ‘selfi sh nationalism’, where governments turn inwards, prioritising national inter-est rather than international solidarity.
