- Description
- The development of work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities in two generalist degrees at the University of Newcastle, Australia, has provided key insights into the challenges and opportunities for WIL educators seeking to produce impactful experiences for higher education students. This chapter discusses the implementation of new WIL programs introduced to the Business School and the College of Engineering, Science and Environment, with analytical focus given to the context of national and institutional WIL policy. The findings put forward identify five key elements essential to the development of impactful WIL, namely: (a) clear national and institutional policies, (b) leadership and resourcing, (c) a research-based approach to curriculum design, (d) a scaffolded curriculum, and (e) a customized approach that both aligns with the specific needs of the student cohort and is sustainable over time. Whilst derived from a specific setting, these findings have wider applicability to the design of WIL in generalist degrees from other contexts.
