- Complex flow behaviour of a bubble plume in a semi-batch bubble column system was studied to determine the transition from homogeneous to heterogeneous flow regime in presence of an anionic surfactant (10 ppm sodium dodecyl sulphate) and airflow rates varying in the range from 0.1 – 0.5 L/min. Highspeed imaging in shadowgraphy mode was used to analyse the bubble size distribution which indicated a mean diameter decreasing from ~ 0.60 mm to 0.51 mm with increasing flow rates. A 3D Eulerian-Eulerian CFD model was developed which was used to quantify gas volume fraction and turbulence energy dissipation rate in the system based on the experimentally measured bubble size distribution. The model showed that the maximum gas volume fraction in the system increased from ~ 0.016 to 0.13 with increasing gas superficial velocity while the corresponding turbulence energy dissipation rate increased from ~7 x 10-4 to 1.99 m2/s3. It was observed that symmetry in the radial velocity profiles was lost at higher flowrates. Also, experimentally a distinct stable froth layer was observed to form at the free surface at higher gas superficial velocities due to the accumulation of bubbles favoured by reduced coalescence in the presence of surfactant and decaying system turbulence. CFD model predictions and experimental observations indicated a transition in the system hydrodynamics from homogeneous to heterogeneous flow regime at higher superficial gas velocity cases.
