- Description
- Within the maelstrom of developments impinging on the future of work, few have attracted as much attention as the rise of the gig economy (Healy et al., 2017). Its emergence has come about through technological advances that enable ‘platform companies’ to connect buyers and sellers in a wide range of new and old markets, upending traditional business models. The most prominent platform services operate in ride sharing, food and grocery delivery, and household help, although similar companies are now appearing more widely, in healthcare and social services, for instance. Through their user-friendly applications (apps), such companies have greatly expanded consumer choice and convenience while also driving the proliferation of contingent and weakly regulated working arrangements.
