- Description
- Ice particles of spherical shape and micron size are pivotal to generate the high-quality ice slurries in terms of thermos-physical properties. However, initiation of nucleation in micro-sized water droplets has proved to be rather challenging, requiring a large supercooling degree (< 40 degreesC). In this study, ultrasonic vibration has been applied to decrease supercooling degree and hence reduce the energy footprint for production of micro-sized ice particles. Specifically, micro-sized water droplets containing micro-sized glass beads (63mum tilde 75mum) were generated and placed on a cooling plate coated with hydrophobic surface where the ultrasonic vibration was applied. The nucleation onset in the micro-sized droplet was detected and analysed using a high-speed camera. Effects of vibration induction time and intensity on the nucleation onset temperature of micro-sized water droplets have been investigated. The results showed that the supercooling degree of water droplets was significantly reduced after applying the ultrasonic vibration, specifically decreasing as the vibration induction time and intensity increased. However, water droplets broke up when the vibration intensity was higher than a critical value for a given induction time. Also, the droplet temperature increased to values above the freezing point when the induction time was too long due to vibration heating. It was also observed that nucleation was triggered by the co-work of vibration and the presence of beads. Further work is warranted in the near future to elucidate the physics underlying the onset of ice nucleation under the effect of ultrasonic vibration.
