- Description
- The investigation into serviceability and ultimate failure of ageing water retaining infrastructure is critical for cost, efficiency, safety and legality concerns. As a case study, this paper investigates an 80-year-old unreinforced concrete reservoir, where possible failure mechanisms are analysed to make an informed proposal for application of a suitable monitoring strategy. The proposed strategy considers appropriate equipment to monitor the serviceability and ultimate failure of the reservoir over a long period of time with careful consideration of the accuracy, cost, sampling rate and complexity of the network. Accordingly, strain gauge, tiltmeter, total station and piezometer measurements are proposed which require subsequent processing and finite element modelling.
