- One of the biggest challenges for educators is how to include all learners in culturally diverse classrooms. One way forward, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) argues, is for schools to foster 21st century skills (Ananiadou and Claro, 2009). Mishra and Mehta’s research (2017:13) found that teachers place high value on skills such as: ‘problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, innovation, communication, and collaboration’. Cooperative learning (CL), well implemented, is an ideal vehicle for developing these skills, yet in many countries it is under-utilised. This article will review findings from schools using CL successfully in different countries. Analysis indicates that there are some common factors which may be helpful for others wishing to implement CL. These include: developing a shared vision and communities of practice; the nature of professional development; the teaching of skills; the use of physical space; the involvement of families and communities, and, importantly, the enjoyment experienced through working cooperatively.
