- The quality of the parent-child relationship has been associated with outcomes in children across their social, emotional, and psychological development. While fathers have been overshadowed throughout parenting literature, it is essential to parenting research to understand determinants that impact how fathers view their relationship with their children. These perceptions may indicate the quality of their relationship or how they behave towards their child. This study examined associations between general stress and parenting stress on how fathers perceive closeness or conflict within their parent-child relationship. Ninety-three fathers of children (aged 4-7 years old) participated in the study. Fathers completed questionnaires concerning demographic information, parenting stress, general stress, and the parent-child relationship. Parenting stress, including both child- and father-specific stressors, significantly predicted fathers’ perceived relationships with their children. Greater stress associated with child- and father-specific stressors were related to more perceived conflict within the parent-child relationship, whereas lower child-specific stressors were related to more perceived closeness within the parent-child relationship. This contributes to the involvement of fathers in parenting research and clinical practice, as parenting stress influencing fathers perceived parent-child relationships has implications for future interventions as it highlights the need to assess and consider parent stress alongside the children’s symptoms.
