- In the creative industries the processes of production are valued as highly as the products of the creative process. That is, the making and the made are integrally related. For this reason, we have theories that examine creative processes, creative products and the reception of those products. That sounds like a whole lot of theory. Indeed, it is, but it is not just theory for the sake of theory. Theory is always situated in practice. Theory informs practice, and practice examines theory. My PhD research took an established theory of humour and through the application of dramaturgy examined the theory using a traditional vaudeville performance form know as a ‘two-act’– the pairing of a ‘comedian’ and ‘straight-man’. That seems pretty conventional so far. However, the people were substituted by computer programs, the performance was online rather than on-stage, and the comedy scripts were generated by computer scripts. The outcomes included an award-winning comedy duo, a successful PhD, and a whole raft of insights into the creative process of comedy writing and into the role of theory in creative practice.
