- Description
- There are four significant markers to consider in any appraisal of Myall Creek and its significant place in Australian history. Firstly, history did recognise and record the brutal and horrific massacre of around 30 defenceless Wirrayaraay Aboriginal people, mostly old people and children in 1838. Secondly, the perpetrators were brought to justice and seven of the culprits were hanged for their crime. Thirdly, the usual silence surrounding this kind of event was broken, although from that point on such crimes were covered up. Massacres and violence continued unabated across the continent but they were erased from memory and history and no one else was ever brought to justice. Finally, more recently Myall Creek has witnessed a remarkable healing process involving both Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members who each year gather to acknowledge and sadly reflect on this tragic event. I will consider some of these points along with my invitation to deliver the 2015 Myall Creek Address at the Memorial Service and Commemoration site. This chapter is my personal reflection and memoir of my journey to Myall Creek in 2015.
