- Accumulated evidence suggests that concurrent treatment of mental health and substance use problems leads to better outcomes. That is, integrated treatments, for mental illnesses and comorbid drug use, are proving more effective than approaches that respond to these issues separately. This chapter introduces readers to the latest advances in psychological treatments of comorbidity in the context of psychotic disorders, along with the range of treatment manuals and resources available to clinicians. It also provides a brief, critical evaluation of the evidence supporting current clinical guidelines for addiction. Illustrated with case studies, the chapter also explains how comorbid drug use interacts with psychotic symptoms and negatively impacts on health and well-being, and outlines some of the barriers and facilitators of treatment in routine clinical settings.
