- Students’ language competence and capacity for self-reflection are improved as they become more autonomous in taking greater responsibility for their own learning. The role that lecturers play in developing learner autonomy is significant, especially in Confucian-heritage cultures like Vietnam. This chapter presents findings on Vietnamese lecturers’ attitudes towards learner autonomy from 28 semi-structured interviews with English lecturers and 20 classroom observations, undertaken in five universities in Hanoi. These lecturers’ interpretations of the concept as well as of the enhancing and constraining factors towards learner autonomy were diverse. Even though all the lecturers stress the importance of learner autonomy, little evidence of learner autonomy was found in their classroom teaching. Recommendations for strategies to enhance learner autonomy in language teacher training programs in a culturally sensitive way are suggested.
