- This paper presents a novel 3D clumped particle method for more realistic simulation of rocks with high unconfined compressive strength to tensile strength ratio (UCS/TS) and nonlinear strength envelope. The proposed method imitates the growth process of mineral particles to prepare the numerical sample. Clumps characterized by representative random-irregular shapes are used to achieve a close-packed microstructure which significantly strengthens the grain interlocking. The current method is applied to simulate Lac du Bonnet granite. The presented results show that the UCS/ TS ratio and nonlinear strength envelope of Lac du Bonnet granite can be captured very well. The crack initiation stress and crack damage stress are also accurately predicted. Finally, the failure transition from brittle to ductile is investigated and observations indicate good agreement with experiments.
