- Description
- This chapter explores literature and policies that indicate future directions in English as a Foreign Language or Second Language in Saudi Arabia and the teaching of English. The chapter reviews recent research predicting trends in English use and TESOL, and shows that the impetus behind change in English and English teaching in Saudi Arabia remains a desire to spread Islam, increase trade, and improve the economy and political relationships. Three key policies that are likely to impact on English and English teaching are described. In addition, the chapter considers the significant potential impact of e-learning and mobile technologies, as well as other likely trends. It is noted that along with a change from EFL to ESL and EGP to ESAP accompanied by English as a medium of instruction in STEM courses, English pedagogies are likely to change to being more individualised. In addition, Saudi English teachers are likely to draw more on international resources and work in partnership with international companies and institutions to deliver English teaching. However, it is vital that the quality of international online material is monitored and that local teachers are involved in ensuring that English teaching is culturally and thematically relevant to the local Saudi context.
