- Description
- Spanning almost three decades this chapter surfaces the challenges and opportunities of progressive thinking through the evolution of practice-based research with the media industry. It is in part a personal journey—from broadcast documentary film producer to Head of the School of Creative Industries at the University of Newcastle—but mostly it is about how we embrace serendipity and understand the power of collaboration to help us imagine better. Sharing learning from a series of innovative and experimental projects motivated by the media industry’s recognition of its need for reinvention, the overarching story is also reflexive. The work described required academic research teams to think and act differently, particularly when the greatest impact of any activity may occur over long time frames or where traditional disciplinary structures and university career incentives conflict with the creation of integrated research programs. As researchers, we were also compelled to consider the impact of our research beyond the academy—measured not by traditional metrics of published outputs, but by its relevance and significance to the stakeholders we were working with. Each of the projects described has its own specific objectives and outcomes, however, collectively they demonstrate the transformative potential of a practice-based approach for both research and learning. The chapter concludes with a personal reflection on the learning so far and its practical application towards a more progressive, inclusive, equitable and flexible future.
