- Description
- Sketching and the ability to draw have long been recognised as important skills for designers. Traditionally the role of sketching has proved the primary means of ideation and concept development. Drawing has provided the link between the thought processes and the outside world. Today’s design activities are often conducted in teams of design professionals who represent different design fields, e.g. architects and engineers. The different design fields necessary for both the large and complex projects that attract much of the design activity. Within these teams communication of design and technical concepts and information is critical. The role of drawing and sketching now expands to fill a primary role in communication and consequent product development. This paper reports on the role of sketching and drawing in the process of achieving shared understanding among members of design teams. Two years of industry based research provides a comprehensive analysis of what role sketching and drawing have in the process of communicating ideas and progressing design concept development in the context of Multi-Disciplinary Design Teams.
