- This paper provides a review of the main techniques for controlling a dynamometer based on back-to-back electrical machines. The two most common techniques are the Inverse Mechanical Dynamics (IMD) and dynamic dynamometer approaches. Both rely on estimated mechanical parameters of the back-to-back machines in the test rig. Error in the estimation of these parameters leads to deterioration in the performance of the emulation. This paper proposes a simple observer based strategy to compensate for the estimation error and improve the robustness of the emulation techniques. A simulation case study is presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the techniques, the performance that can be obtained and the improved robustness to parameter estimation error afforded by the proposed compensation strategy.
