- Description
- Schools are now highly digital environments. Administration, communication, curriculum, assessment, learning analytics, teaching and learning are increasing conducted using digital tools. Beyond school, children and young people are spending more time online. Face-to-face interactions with friends are being supplemented with digital communication. This online activity generates digital footprints. Digital footprints now play a role in people’s employment and educational opportunities. This chapter will detail what school leaders need to understand about digital footprints: that it is an equity issue; that concerns about online safety have captured the discussion but that there are benefits to the curation of a positive digital footprint; and that they are now an essential component of digital career literacy. How these issues can be addressed by school leaders will be explained via exploration of the advantages of helping students to build positive digital footprints, ways that this can be done, and how this concept could be sold to parents who are often concerned about children’s safety online. School leaders can harness their schools’ digital reputation to help students curate a positive online presence. The chapter concludes with a conceptual model for thinking about how digital footprint education can be incorporated into school practices and the curriculum in meaningful and contextually appropriate ways.
