- As we approach the third decade of the twenty-first century, it is clear that the reality of climate change, driven by emissions of carbon dioxide from human activity, is fast approaching the point of having real and irreversible consequences for ongoing human existence on earth. Despite the enormity and severity of the ecological challenge, at the time of writing, some major so-called “developed” countries (e.g., Australia and the United States) are led by politicians who downplay or deny the reality of human-produced climate change and/or insist on presenting a dichotomy between jobs and the environment, with priority given to ongoing economic growth that exacerbates climate change. This particular, existential crisis is set in ongoing and in many instances heightened levels of global inequality, poverty, conflict, insecurity, and the associated rise of extreme right-wing political movements/parties tied to ostensibly nationalist projects. Educating populations to understand and respond to these conditions, in ways that can contribute to more just, equal, secure, sustainable, and democratic alternatives, is essential.
