- Description
- A novel binder has been developed as a replacement for pure oil in the selective agglomeration of hydrophobic particles. The novel binder consists of highly concentrated water in oil emulsion, 95 vol% water and 5 vol% organic liquid, and was developed with the aim of reducing the amount of organic liquid required to achieve agglomeration. Thus far the use of the novel binder has been limited to the agglomeration of naturally hydrophobic coal particles. However, as coal is a highly heterogeneous material, with no two feeds the same, the general applicability of the work has been limited. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to apply the novel binder to a model feed comprising of hydrophobised silica. A surfactant, cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, was used to modify the surface of the silica and render it hydrophobic. Agglomeration experiments were then carried out using the novel binder, while additional experiments were conducted using a conventional binder, kerosene, to quantify the reduction in organic liquid achieved for the model system. To achieve agglomeration using the conventional binder it was necessary to add 15 wt% kerosene while for the novel binder the organic liquid addition was only 1.7 wt%, lower by a factor of 9. An examination into the influence of agitation time revealed that agglomeration could be achieved within 7 seconds using the novel binder.
