- Evaluating corrosivity of infrastructure immersed in or exposed to marine environments is essential for estimating the service life of items such as bridges, shipping, mooring chains and oil rigs. Traditionally, coupons, strips and light chains have been used to indicate the corrosivity of steels in immersion environments. For atmospheric corrosion it is well-known that size, shape, orientation, steel composition, and season of initial exposure have an influence. However, not all these effects have been considered in detail for seawater immersion (and tidal) corrosion conditions. The present paper reports results of field trials in which the effect of size of coupons and orientation were assessed, specifically for marine immersion conditions, and compared to corrosion in a severe marine atmospheric environment. Coupons of weathering steel were included, as this steel is known to be effective as a corrosivity indicator in aggressive atmospheric environments. It was found that the surface area of coupons and the orientation of coupons had minimal effect on corrosivity in immersion conditions and that weathering steel corroded at about the same rate as mild steel. The results are compared with those from similar trials in severe marine atmospheric conditions.
