Description: Congenital meconium peritonitis is due to antenatal perforation of bowel. The best known such condition is meconium peritonitis due to meconium ileus associated with cystic fibrosis of the pancreas, but there are many other less common causes. One of these is antenatal perforation of a Meckel's diverticulum, which has been reported by Rosza and Gross. Since a congenital infantile hydrocele is really an extension of the peritoneal cavity, abdominal pathology may first be evident in the hydrocele, and Nagel described neonatal appendicitis presenting in this way.
