- In this study, the effects of pumice and metakaolin (MK) on the durability and microstructural properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) are investigated. A total of 10 mixtures including different pumice and MK contents as cement replacement [0-15 and 0-10 by weight % (wt.), respectively] were designed. Fresh concrete tests, including slump flow, visual stability index, T50, V-funnel, and L-box, were carried out. Compression tests were performed to determine the mechanical properties. Water absorption, electrical resistivity, and rapid chloride permeability (RCP) tests were performed to assess durability properties. The microstructure of SCCs was studied via scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. The workability of SCC mixtures containing pumice and MK generally satisfied the fresh-state behavior requirements. With the inclusion of pumice, the compressive strength decreased at 28 days, whereas it increased significantly at 90 days. Most of the binary mixtures displayed strength enhancement over the control mix at ages of 28 and 90 days, and this improvement was more significant at 90 days. The SEM micrographs illustrated the packed pore structure of samples containing MK and pumice, which promoted the strength and durability properties of these mixes. The results suggest that, in general, the combined use of 10 wt.% pumice and 10 wt.% MK provides a suitable replacement ratio that enhances both the durability and mechanical properties of SCC.
