- Description
- This paper presents a novel liver segmentation algorithm that is used for computer-aided hepatic surgical planning. It can automatically and accurately segment liver in abdominal CT images. The algorithm integrates level set with support vector machine, delivering a superior segmentation performance to either of the approaches. There are three major steps in the proposed method. Firstly, a distance regularized level set evolution process is built as a main frame to segment liver from CT images. The evolution is derived as the gradient flow that minimizes an energy functional consisting of a distance regularization term and an external energy term, driving the motion of the zero level set toward desired locations. Secondly, the most likely location of the liver in current image is calculated using support vector machines and integrated morphological operation. The support vector machines are implemented to classify the image into pixel-wised liver area or non-liver area. An integrated morphological operation is implemented to refine the result of support vector machine classification to get the delineation of the liver. Finally, the accurate delineation of the liver is used to guide the calculation of the external energy term, forming a novel level set segmentation algorithm. Examples of applying the proposed algorithm on real CT data are presented. It has shown that the proposed algorithm delivered superior segmentation capability than the original distance regularized level set evolution method.
