- Description
- Recent years have witnessed various changes in the business world regarding technology and ecological degradation, which has seen corporate social responsibility (CSR) increasingly used as a competitive tool in all industries. It has become especially popular in the fiercely competitive service retailing industry where implementation of CSR practices has grown in line with the industry's importance to the economy. Accordingly, this research was undertaken to study the perception of customers of fast-food restaurants in Hong Kong in order to assess the impact of CSR and food health and safety (FHS) implementation on corporate image (CI) and corporate responsibility (CR). Empirical evidence was gathered using a self-administered questionnaire survey of randomly selected customers leaving randomly selected fast-food restaurants in Hong Kong. The 350 completed questionnaires were statistically analysed, verified for validity and reliability, and the resulting data used to identify the causal relationships between the study’s four constructs, CSR, FHS, CI, and CR, through structural equation modelling. The analysed data reveals that CSR has a positive correlation with FHS, as FHS is part of CSR and that both CSR and FHS are positively related to CI and CR. Having discovered this, it was further found that FHS is a full mediator in the relationships between CSR and CI and CR. This strengthens the argument that relevant CSR activities are crucial for sustainability and that an activity that can be noticed or experienced by customers has a better chance of enhancing CI and CR. The study adds to the relevant body of knowledge both theoretically and practically. Adding new erudition with regards to FHS and its role in the relationships between CSR and CI and CR is a contribution to the CSR theoretical body of knowledge, while the finding that there are positive relationships between CSR, FHS, CI, and CR corroborates the findings from previous CSR related studies that highlight the significance of CSR to a sustainable business.
