- Product innovation can be defined as the process of making changes to something established that adds value to users. For the survival and prosperity of manufacturing units, entrepreneurs need to find out new ideas that can be implemented in the products leading to their innovation. Product innovation is highly cumbersome process as it requires a wide range of knowledge about all the similar products, their past history, and the knowledge about new technological advancements. The process of product innovation is carried out by innovators or group of experts. Not only they need to take proper decisions, they have to do this quickly and systematically, so that the changes in the product may be implemented on time. Present work addresses this problem by proposing a system that uses a collective, team-like knowledge developed by innovation related experiences in the past. This system is called Smart Innovation Engineering System or SIE system. SIE system uses experience-based decision support tool known as Set of Experience Knowledge Structure. It stores and maintains experiential knowledge and uses such experiences in decision making when a similar query is presented in future. A formal decisional event or experience is represented by a unique combination of Variables, Functions, Constraints and Rules. When a query based on innovation objectives is fed into the Smart Innovation Engineering system, it provides a list of proposed solution based on previous similar experiences. This solution contains information including the components replaced, added and other details like its performance factor. Once the user selects the final solution and also set priorities, the system looks for the best possible changes (components to be replaced or new additions) that can be incorporated into the product based on the present alternatives available. The final solution is stored in the system that can be used in future for similar queries. In this way, the system updates itself every time a decision is made, thus gaining more and more expertise with time. The SIE system will benefit the entrepreneurs and manufacturing organizations at it facilitates product innovation process, thus reducing the extent of dependability on experts. Manufacturing organizations around the globe can store, share and reuses the experience-based knowledge among themselves at a common platform. Implementing this system in manufacturing organizations will allow them to take quick and systematic innovation-related decisions. The user get the advice from the SIE system similar to that of group of experts from the click of a mouse making the innovation process quick and systematic. The analysis of basic concepts and implementation method proves that SIE is an expert system that can facilitate Cyber Physical Systems and can play a vital role towards the establishment of Industry 4.0. Moreover, it can be used further for lean innovation and sustainable innovation in future. The SIE system has the potential to be used by large enterprises or group of small and medium enterprises manufacturing similar products or even by new high-tech start-ups.
