- The integration of transport infrastructure projects in response to increased urbanization and expansion of cities is fundamental to sustainable development. Rail station interventions are key to the re-structuring of the city, they have the potential to act as catalysts for new development or regeneration. Mass transit networks and their stations connect the various neighbourhoods of the city with the station buildings as the critical spatial node of the urban experience. The critical opportunity of transport interventions is to resurrect the civic presence of the station typology within a public square or the main street as the activity node of the local community and as a connector between communities which inform the design and form of cities. The dilemma for government and transport agencies is to ensure that the available resources are directed to the most appropriate and urgent initiative to promote access to high quality public transport in response to congested commuter corridors and environmental pollution. The options vary from the introduction of new transit systems, the extension of existing infrastructure or the redevelopment of existing stations. The issue is further compounded by the discussion of the sustainability of constructing new infrastructure or the redevelopment of existing infrastructure elements and consolidating and compacting future development. The city of Sydney through its various agencies has attempted to implement each of these with various degrees of success including the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link, The North West Rail Link, Sydney Metro and the development of North Sydney Station and Chatswood Transport Interchange. The paper will summarise the various initiatives undertaken in the last decade, the objectives, the constraints and the successful design strategies, and construction of rail infrastructure which through various scales of intervention has delivered enhanced urban design outputs that create sustainable urban spaces.
