- This paper traces the origins of contemporary organisational change back to the Japanese ascendancy of the early 1980s, with the emergence of global corporations such as Sony and Mitsubishi. The increasing drive towards leaner meaner organizations in the Western world is shown to be fuelled by a range of forces including consumer demands, racing technological advances and heightened managerial concerns with global competitiveness. The mounting dependence on expert advice to cope with the rapid pace of change inherent in today’s organisational world has lead to the rise and rise of the management consultancy industry over the period of two decades between 1980 and 2000. This has spawned a management solutions market that has a vested interest in further heightening the pace of change in contemporary organizations. Implications for the future of work are noted with these factors in mind.
