Description: Fentanyl, a rapid acting, short duration synthetic opioid, is a powerful analgesic approximately 100 times more potent than morphine (Chodoff & Domino, 1965). Listed on Australia’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme in 2006 for the treatment of persistent non-cancer pain, fentanyl is available in several formulations including a transdermal patch, prescription of which has increased markedly in recent years both in Australia (Roxburgh et al., 2013) and North America (Compton & Volkow, 2006).
