- In-situ experimental investigations on the porosity of pneumatically conveyed slugs have revealed that slugs are slightly fluidised structures. While it over predicts the degree of fluidisation, the semi-empirical model of Ergun has been shown to accurately predict the porosity profile across the length of a slug. This makes the Ergun equation a simple method for investigating the often difficult to observe changes in the porosity characteristics of a travelling slug at different pipe locations. Experimental investigations on horizontally conveyed slugs were carried out at two pipe locations and the porosity characteristics at these locations were predicted and compared using the Ergun equation.
