- Description
- The majority of electrical machines in Australian coal mining are powered by DC motors. This is due to their proven robustness, simplicity of operation and control, as well as substantial experience with this type of machines accumulated within the industry. Unfortunately, associated high maintenance costs come as a negative side of this dominance. If ways can be found to reduce these costs, it would translate to considerable savings for the industry. A number of projects have been initiated by CRCMining on different aspects of DC motor operation. Investigation of failure mechanisms and possible ways to improve reliability of DC machines would assist in reduction of downtime costs as well as maintaining the DC motorfleet in a controllable, predictable and cost-effective manner. The present paper focuses on three aspects of cost savings: 1. through ensuing good operating condition of the motor itself, 2. through appropriate selection and adjustments of the drive, and 3. through smarter use of modem drive capabilities. The paper summaises the relevant background material, presents the results of computer modelling, and outlines approaches and methods for the expeimental stage.
