- This Bourdieusian field analysis of the Australian field of Family Studies analyses the discipline of Family Studies as a social field in which the criteria for recognition of a discipline and establishment of a discipline in a university context operate as field structures shaping what is possible within the field. Many applied social science fields are very subject to the power of the state and are hierarchically organised. The knowing strategic actions of players in the field can operate to stabilise or bring about change in a field by disrupting this hierarchical organisation. The authors conclude that the establishment of the academic discipline of Family Studies at the University of Newcastle was a strategic move in the Australian field made possible by the network of collaborative relationships within the Global Consortium for International Family Studies. This move shifted the power relations in the field and brought about a unique contribution to the study of families in Australia, which has great potential to strengthen the autonomy of the field in Australia and globally.
